Expansion Updates

August 12, 2010

Markham Stouffville Hospital has reached another major milestone in its expansion project with the closure of its Request for Proposals (RFP) process.

This is a significant step forward for the hospital as it moves toward expanding its facility to accommodate the growing populations of Markham and Stouffville.

The RFP was issued in March 2010 and invited the six pre-qualified companies to submit a bid to build and finance the hospital’s expansion project.

The submitted bids will now be reviewed by the hospital’s expansion team along with representatives from Infrastructure Ontario.

Once a company has been selected to build and finance the hospital’s new building, groundbreaking on the facility will take place shortly after.

Markham Stouffville Hospital’s expansion and redevelopment will double the size of our existing facility and increase the number of programs and services the hospital is able to deliver to its communities.

The redeveloped hospital will include:

  • a new Emergency Department;
  • improved and expanded Ambulatory Clinics;
  • over 100 more inpatient beds and eight new operating rooms;
  • a new Diagnostic Imaging Department;
  • a new Maternal Child area; and
  • a new Mental Health unit.

The hospital expects to break ground on its new building later this year and open the doors to its new facility in 2014.

**Notice to Patients and Visitors - Diabetes Education Clinic**

Starting August 7, 2010, weather permitting, patients and visitors coming to Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Diabetes Clinics will have to use Butternut Lane East to access the clinic’s parking lot.

Please note that from this point on, access to the clinic’s parking lot will begin to alternate from Butternut Lane East to Butternut Lane West every few days.

Signage will be placed up on Church Street to indicate which access road is open. Please watch carefully and drive slowly as the road leading to the clinic is graded but graveled.

This change is due to the construction taking place in front of the hospital. Work crews are in the final stages of building and paving the road out in front of the hospital and for this reason will need to alternate the access road to the clinic every few days.

The construction work is expected to be complete within two to three weeks. If you have any questions or comments, please send them to us at myhospital@msh.on.ca. Thank you.

July 23, 2010

Notice – **Sidewalk Closure**

Starting the week of July 26, the portion of the sidewalk leading to the main doors of the hospital will be closed to ALL pedestrian traffic.

People using this sidewalk to access the hospital are asked to cross over, using the crosswalk, to the Medical Office Building and either enter through the MOB, or use the sidewalk there to access the hospital. Directional signage will be in place to guide you.

Stop signs and barricades will be installed to allow people to cross the road safely and security and volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance.

This change is to allow some construction work to progress in this area. The work will take approximately two weeks to complete.

Over the following weeks, a number of construction projects will be taking place on Markham Stouffville Hospital’s campus. Please use caution when arriving and walking around the hospital.

If you have any questions or comments, please email them to myhospital@msh.on.ca.

July 2010

 On Sunday, July 18, the Town of Markham kicked off the construction of its new East Markham Community Centre and Library (EMCCL) with a groundbreaking ceremony on Bur Oak Avenue.

The event featured a five piece brass band as well as speeches from local councilors, the Mayor and Markham Stouffville Hospital’s own President and CEO, Janet Beed.

Once constructed, the new EMCCL will feature a competition sized pool, leisure and therapeutic pools, a triple gymnasium, a fitness room, an aerobic room, an indoor childrens playground, a rehearsal hall and several multi-use spaces and a full library with a medical section.

The centre will also connect directly to Markham Stouffville Hospital and create a Health and Wellness Campus that will provide patients, visitors and residents with the tools and skills they need to stay healthy throughout their lives.

The centre will be constructed around the same time that the hospital will be working on its own facility expansion. Visitors and patients coming to the hospital's campus should watch for signage and be cautious as they drive or walk near the ongoing construction. The new EMCCL will take approximately two years to build and is expected to open in 2012. The hospital will complete its expansion project in 2014.
